Bal Harbour Area Information
When city planners were trying to come up with a name for their tiny 0.6 square mile community in Miami-Dade County, someone suggested the name Bay Harbour. Many officials objected to the name since the community was actually located on the beach.
Since the village ran from Biscayne Bay to the beach, city planners created a name to honor that fact. Thus, Bal Harbour was created - taking the "B" from Bay and the "A" and "L" from the word Atlantic.
The small village, which has a population of abut 3,305, enjoys all the benefits of being so close to the city of Miami while still maintaining a quiet and exclusive beach town atmosphere.
Mayor Jean Rosenfield said she prides her village's commitment to careful and responsible planning that doesn't deter from the community's original charm. The village is also known for its low crime rate.
There was a lot of excitement surrounding Bal Harbour recently with the opening of One Bal Harbour Resort and Spa, the first hotel built in the village in more than 50 years!
The Village seems poised to continue developing beautiful communities, including the St. Regis Resort and Residences (scheduled to debut in 2011), which replaced the more than 50-year-old Sheraton Bal Harbour.
