History of North Miami
North Miami has a rich history that dates back to early Indian inhabitation in the 1700s.
Later, United States Army soldiers would come through and cut a Military Trial through the area, connecting Fort Lauderdale to Fort Dallas around 1856.
This eight foot trail would later become Dade County’s first roadway. It would later gain fame for its distinctive natural bridge, which was made of limestone.
Although the bridge no longer stands, it would have been in the area that later became Arch Creek Memorial Park.
Development continued to increase in the area over several decades until 1926, when the town of North Miami was officially incorporated.
Except, at the time, it was known as the Town of Miami Shores. This was in part because of its eastern boundary with the Atlantic Ocean.
A horrific September 1926 hurricane stalled growth in the area for a while, but the community of North Miami ultimately rebounded and its popularity continued to grow.
Today, the 10-square-mile community is home to roughly 60,000 residents.
