Dania Beach's Intriguing History
Dania Beach was originally incorporated into Broward County in the 1880s, making it older than many other communities in South Florida, including neighboring Hollywood. Beginning as a settlement called Modello, the community was home to many residents of Danish ancestry, who later changed the town’s name to Dania. In 1999, the community officially changed its name to Dania Beach to emphasize its proximity to the water.
Dania Beach grew in 2001 when it annexed several unincorporated areas of Broward County, which also helped increase its population and today, the 6.31-square-mile community is an exceptional community with a robust job market. For instance, Sun Air International is headquartered in Dania Beach, as is the American Maritime Officers and Alec Bradley Cigar Co., which makes hand-rolled cigars, is also headquartered there.
